What is the class duration?
Each class lasts about an hour. Session is from Sep to June.

Which day during the week will the classes be taking place?
Classes are usually conducted on alternate Sundays

Will it be possible for a kid without any knowledge of bengali alphabet to join the class?
Yes a child who does not know the Bengali alphabet can join. Assumption is that they are able to read in English. We introduce Bengali letters phonetically in English.

I would like my child to learn the language, culture and also to read and write the letters
Exercises/HW will be assigned to familiarize with the Bangla Lipi. Each class duration is divided into 2 segments - Bangla reading writing/speaking and then Stories about Festivals/ Mythological Characters/historical facts, etc. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a Bangla natok that will be staged as part of Korok’s Poila Boishakh program (Hey Nuton).

What is the difference between Korok & Shikkhaloy?
KOROK is the parent organization and Shikkaloy is a branch dedicated towards Bangla literacy.

Is it possible to enroll in the bengali lesson classes only or are you automatically enrolled in both Korok & Shikkhaloy?
Shikkhaloy enrollment includes automatic KCA membership. Members enjoy discounted tickets for special event, participate free of charge in all enrichment programs, including K-Talks. Membership of course also supports a growing, vibrant Bengali cultural community!

There seem to be events (cultural programs, annual school presentation) that are in person. How is the school conducted?
Learning is exclusively**Remote via zoom** For Shikkhaloy’s Annual day as well as selected cultural programs, remote students participate virtuallly via zoom or with their pre-recorded videos. We have students from California, Michigan, Washington, Canada - all get an opportunity to showcase their talents. We also have online sessions dedicated towards Bangla poetry and panel discussions. Zoom has opened possibilities for us that were unimaginable before.

What are K-Talks - are they part of the bengali learning class curriculum?
K-Talks are not part of the school curriculum. The zoom series is a way to introduce our students to some of the celebrities/role models we parents/teachers saw growing up in India and Bangladesh.

Is there any curriculum for the annual year we can review before enrolling for bengali classes to make sure it's a good fit?
